Time to leave Philadelphia and our Best Western Hotel ....
Neil collected the car and we were off on the open road .....
Driving out of Philadelphia .... Goodbye
Phillies' Stadium
The Kitchen ....
The Master Bedroom ....
The house where we will be staying for the next two nights in the basement ....
The street where we will be staying .... the houses are really quaint and rustic
First stop was for food and we read in the guide book that Ben's Chilli Bowl was a must. This isn't the original diner that was set up in the middle of Washington but it was still really good :-)
After the pit stop we took a walk down to Union Station. Another stunning building with lots of shops, bars and restaurants
Union Station
Capitol Building
Washington Monument
The Summer House
The view from Capitol Hill looking down on Washington Monument
They do love each other really 💕
This photo doesn't do this justice but I promise you there were loads of Fireflies in the front garden just before a storm. They literally lit up the front lawn - shame it didn't come out but they were beautiful

So it's our second day in Washington and we have a lot of walking ahead of us. So after breakfast with our bellies full we walked back up to Capitol Hill ....
A quick visit to Capitol Visitor Center ....
... then a beautiful walk through a park
Now to walk through Pennsylvania Avenue towards the White House
Trump's Hotel
Poor Eleanor was so hot .....
We made it to Lafayatte Square to take a quick photo of the White House before being ushered out of the park very quickly by the Police. They were really insistent that we got out of there very quickly and then there were lots of sirens, police cars and helicopters. It was quite unnerving as it seemed as if there was a panic in the city?!? I joked and said it was Trump coming back home and he needed the vicinity cleared in case of an assassination attempt!!
Some more amazing architecture
Red Cross Building
The other side of The White House
Washington Monument
Our two and the Washington Monument
National Museum of African American History and Culture
It was so hot we needed refreshments to cool us down but we couldn't eat them fast enough without them melting and running down our hands - so much for the nostalgic red, white & blue!
World War II Memorial
WWII Memorial - A pillar for each American State
So I took a picture of each State that we have visited or will be visiting on this road trip
New York
Maryland
Patrick and Eleanor cooling off their toes
In fact it was just nice for all of us to cool off our toes
Washington
North Carolina
Virginia
South Carolina
Pennsylvania
Leaving the Memorial to head on down to the Lincoln's Memorial
Mummy and her ducklings
Lincoln Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
Lincoln himself
Lincoln's First Speech when elected
Lincoln's Second Speech when he was re-elected for his second term
It's funny seeing this statue in real life after watching Night in the Museum II
Great shot all the way down to the Washington Monument
Korean War Memorial 1950-1953
So on with the walk back home we dipped in to the Museum of American History just quickly before it closed .....
The information on display showed us how America had moved on with their transport, food and the people ....
Exhausted now it was time to walk back home ....
The one thing that has really affected the children is the amount of homeless people in each of the cities we have visited so far. It has really upset them and they can't understand why there would be so many. Obviously we have had to explain to them that we can't help all of them ...... this wall art seemed somewhat poignant .....
So we have come to the end of our short trip to Washington and to sum up I would say we have crammed in quite a lot and again wished we had a bit more time to do some of the museums - the buildings from the outside looked amazing and I am sure the contents inside would be just as brilliant. I loved Washington and the feel of how patriotic the city was.
Neil: "I loved the fact that there was lots of history and the buildings were impressive. It was nice to be in the centre of America's democracy."
Patrick: "Rushed! History filled city that I would liked to have spend a few more days in. Ben's Chilli Bowl was amazing."
Eleanor: "I loved the Airbnb where we stayed, the house was really cool. It was a nice city and the parks were colourful."
love The Wise Old Owls xxxx
